Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving
Three hundred gray coats
You volunteer at a museum coat check on a packed Saturday.
Malik, a visitor of 72, has lost his claim ticket and is growing loud and shaky. The rule for lost tickets is to wait until closing, when the remaining coats can be matched to their owners. Twenty people are in line behind him, and Nikhil, your fellow volunteer, is beside you.
The scene
Malik: It's a gray coat! My house keys and my bus pass are in the pocket!
Nikhil: Sir, lost tickets wait until closing, two hours. There's a bench.
Malik: Two hours? There are three hundred gray coats. Please, just let me look.
Nikhil: If you go search, I'm alone with this line. What do we do?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Malik and Nikhil?
- 2Describe a time you had to help one upset person while others were waiting on you. How did you balance it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
