Written scenario · Empathy, Resilience

Where the building stood

You are a volunteer guide leading a neighborhood history walk.

You are leading eighteen people on a two-hour walk and are already twenty minutes behind. At the empty lot where a demolished community hall once stood, an older participant begins describing dances she attended there and becomes tearful. The group waits quietly. Two more stops remain, and the last one closes to visitors at a fixed time. Some participants have checked their watches, while others are listening closely. It is up to you how to proceed.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in this moment, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide when a plan should give way to a person's needs, and when it should not?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
