Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving
Call my mom
You are a counselor at a week-long overnight summer camp.
On the second night, after lights out, 9-year-old Mateo is sitting on the cabin steps in tears. Your co-counselor, Jess, comes out to join you.

The scene
Mateo: I want to go home. Everybody laughed when I couldn't swim to the dock. Please call my mom.
Jess: (quietly, to you) If we call, she'll drive up tonight. Most kids are fine by day three.
Jess: What do you want to do?
The two questions
- 1What would you do?
- 2How do you decide when to comfort someone and when to encourage them to push through something hard?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
