Scene to read · Empathy, Communication

Still no Dana

You take an evening pottery class.

For three weeks your classmates Ulises and Yong have been making fun of another student's new glasses and haircut in the class group chat. Dana has missed every session since, though she had also mentioned starting a new job. You are unloading the kiln shelves with the two of them.

The scene

Ulises: Still no Dana. Maybe the new haircut's still in hiding.

Yong: Stop, that's terrible. Okay, put it in the chat.

Ulises: Relax, she always sends the laughing face. She's busy with the new job.

Yong: Probably. You've gone quiet. It's just jokes, come on.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Ulises and Yong?
  2. 2Describe a time you were unsure whether someone had been hurt by the way others treated them. What did you do?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
