The quiet one at the bench
You are the third member of a science lab trio with Alistair and Alodia, and you help decide how the group works together.
After a chemistry lab session, your partners Alistair, a returning student aged 59, and Alodia, 29, are wiping down the bench. Alodia transferred in this term and rarely speaks during planning. She has just admitted that she doesn't know the group's unwritten norms, while Alistair is frustrated at planning without her input.
The scene
Alistair: You're quiet when we plan. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Alodia: I'm still figuring things out. I'm worried my questions will sound silly.
Alistair: It's okay to ask, but we still need to know your thoughts.
Alodia: Could someone explain things privately first? Being put on the spot's hard.
The two questions
- 1What would you do or say next, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you helped someone new feel able to take part in a group. What did you do, and what did you learn?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
