Scene to read · Empathy, Communication
My last session
You are a peer tutor at a campus writing center.
You tutor Jordan, a returning student two semesters from finishing her degree. She has just told you and a fellow tutor, Efua, that she will withdraw next week to work full-time because her family cannot cover rent. You know the college offers a leave of absence that would hold her place for a year; she has not mentioned it, and she looks worn out.
The scene
Jordan: So this is my last session. My mom can't cover rent alone anymore.
Efua: I'm sorry, Jordan. That can't have been easy to decide.
Jordan: It wasn't. I've made my peace, mostly. I'd rather not go back over it.
Efua: Then nobody here will push. It's yours to decide. Right?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Jordan?
- 2Describe a time you had to choose between accepting someone's decision and telling them about options they might not have considered.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
