Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
At the door with his coat on
You run the arts and crafts sessions at an adult day program.
It is forty minutes past pickup time. Your coworker Nia has been telling you that one older participant's son, Duc, is always late and does nothing for his father at home; you have never spoken with Duc yourself. He has just come into the craft room, and his father is waiting in the next room.
The scene
Nia: Forty minutes, Duc. Your dad stood at the door with his coat on the whole time.
Duc: Sorry. Work ran over. You're open until six, aren't you?
Nia: Not for him. He thinks he's been forgotten.
Duc: I'm doing all of this on my own, okay?
Nia: You saw him at that door. Back me up here.
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Nia, and what would you say to Duc?
- 2Describe a time you were asked to take a side before you had heard everyone involved. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
