Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism

Late for his mother's show

You are a volunteer usher at a municipal theater, working under head usher Raffaella, and you are posted at the auditorium doors.

The show started five minutes ago. In the lobby, a patron, Quirin, has arrived off a delayed train. Raffaella, the head usher, has put you in charge of the doors tonight and will back whichever call you make.

The scene

Quirin: My train was delayed. This show's my mother's gift. Please admit me.

Raffaella: Latecomers wait until the interval; opening doors disturbs a hundred people.

Quirin: I'll be silent. She's inside alone, wondering where I am.

Raffaella: The doors are yours. I'll support your decision; the audience trusts us.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do at the doors, and what would you say to Quirin and Raffaella?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to balance following a rule against being kind to someone. What did you do, and what did you learn?
