Written scenario · Empathy, Professionalism
The only reason I go out
You coordinate volunteers for a public library's monthly used-book sale.
Walter, 81, has volunteered at every sale for twelve years. Lately he has been giving customers the wrong change and forgetting prices, and two volunteers have asked you to take him off the cash table. When you mention the complaints, he tells you that some months the sale is the only reason he leaves the house.

The two questions
- 1What would you do?
- 2How do you balance kindness to one person with fairness to others who are affected?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
