Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving

Candles by the ditch

You are a cleanup volunteer who bagged the items along this path, and the crew lead has asked for your view.

After a neighborhood cleanup along a roadside path by a drainage ditch, you bagged everything, including photos and candles. Mafalda, a resident, has just learned they were left for her brother. Mael, the crew lead, has the bags beside him. Neighbors have complained about litter here for months, and the bags are still in the truck.

The scene

Mafalda: Those photos and candles were for my brother. Someone threw them in a bag.

Mael: Sorry. They looked like litter, and this stretch has had complaints for months.

Mafalda: Months of complaints, and nobody asked who comes here to sit with him.

Mael: We can put it back, or keep it clear. You bagged them. Your thoughts?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Mafalda and Mael, and what would you do about the spot?
  2. 2How should a community weigh keeping shared spaces tidy against people's informal ways of remembering someone?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
