Scene to read · Empathy, Ethics

Name scribbled out

You are a student in a night viewing lab at the campus observatory.

You left your lab workbook, with six weeks of observations, in the dome ten days ago and never found it; a new one costs forty dollars. Tonight, in the dome, you see it in your classmate Niamh's open bag, your name scribbled out. As she starts to explain, the lab supervisor, Araceli, walks over.

The scene

Niamh: I took it from the lost-and-found shelf. I couldn't afford one. I'm so sorry.

Araceli: You two are whispering. Everything okay over here?

Niamh: Yes, fine. We are only sharing notes for tonight. Yes?

Araceli: Sharing? Workbooks are individual, and I'm checking them at ten. Whose is that one?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Araceli, and what would you do about the workbook?
  2. 2Describe a time someone wronged you and you had to decide how much their circumstances should matter. What did you do?
