Scene to read · Empathy, Communication
Since the letter came
You share an apartment with two roommates, Danilo and Soraya.
The three of you are watering the planter beds in the building's rooftop garden. A letter from the landlord came for Soraya two weeks ago; she never said what was in it, and she has been quiet since.
The scene
Soraya: My head again. Every single day since that letter from the landlord came.
Danilo: You need a beach, not a watering can. I'll make my famous iced tea.
Soraya: Ha. Sure. Tea fixes everything. Forget I said anything.
Danilo: That's the spirit. Hey, back me up here. All work, no rest, right?
The two questions
- 1What would you say or do, now or later?
- 2Describe a time you sensed something was wrong with someone who had not asked for help. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
