Ten minutes of sky
You are running tonight's public observing session for your astronomy club.
On the observing field, clouds are closing in, leaving about ten minutes of clear sky and one working telescope. Bashir, an experienced member, has waited all year to photograph tonight's rare lineup of Jupiter's moons. Niamh, a first-time visitor, drove two hours after seeing the club's open invitation.
The scene
Bashir: Ten minutes of sky left. I need all of it for the exposure.
Niamh: I drove two hours. Could I get one quick look first? Thirty seconds.
Bashir: Moving the camera loses my focus. This won't happen again for years.
Niamh: I get it, honestly. You're running tonight, so it's your call.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and what would you say to Bashir and Niamh?
- 2How should a group weigh its committed members against the newcomers it invites in?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
