Scene to read · Empathy, Communication
Off next month's roster
You manage the volunteer trail-leader schedule for your hiking club.
Liang has missed the last three hikes he was due to lead, and once the group was left waiting at the trailhead. At the trailhead kiosk before today's hike, you have asked him about it, with the club's vice president, Dagmar, beside you.
The scene
Liang: My mother's very ill, and it's only me. Some mornings I can't leave.
Dagmar: I'm so sorry, Liang. But twelve hikers waited here an hour.
Dagmar: Come off next month's roster. Come back whenever things settle.
Liang: Leading these hikes is the one thing I still have. Please don't take it.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Liang and Dagmar, and what would you do with next month's schedule?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to balance kindness to one person with your responsibility to a group.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
