Written scenario · Empathy, Professionalism
The paper cup by the dispenser
You are a passenger waiting for a delayed bus at a city transit center.
Your bus is running forty minutes late, and the waiting hall is nearly empty. Over the past half hour, you've watched an older woman go to the wall stand three times, fill a paper cup, and sip from it on a nearby bench. The hand sanitizer dispenser and a small water fountain sit side by side, and from your seat you can't tell which one she used. She seems unsteady on her feet. When she catches your eye, she looks away, clearly embarrassed. A staff member sits at the ticket desk across the hall.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to step into a stranger's private situation when you aren't sure what is actually happening?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
