Skip his turn

You help lead a seniors' coach trip and are running the rest-stop trivia game.

At a highway rest stop picnic table beside the coach, you're running a team trivia game. The winning table gets the front seats. Florian, 77, whose memory has been fading, keeps losing track of the question, and his table is tied for the lead. His teammate Tao, 71, comes over to you with Florian, while Florian's wife sits at the next table, close enough to hear.

The scene

Tao: We're tied, boarding's in ten. Could the rest of us answer the remaining turns?

Florian: I keep losing the question halfway through. I hate holding everyone up.

Tao: You're running this. Say yes and our whole table still makes it on time.

Florian: Skip me, then. Just keep it quiet, my wife's watching from that table.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Florian and Tao?
  2. 2Describe a time when including someone meant slowing a group down. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
