Written scenario · Empathy, Motivation

What's the point?

You are a paid tutor for a Grade 11 student preparing for a provincial math exam.

Three weeks before the exam, the student you tutor stops doing practice problems. Today he pushes his notebook away and says: "What's the point? I'm going to fail anyway." His parents, who are paying for the sessions, have told you they expect a passing grade.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to the student?
  2. 2How do you balance supporting someone with holding them accountable?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
