Scene to read · Empathy, Communication

An honest salesman

You are a customer waiting your turn at a phone store counter in a mall.

Beside you, Walid, 74, came in to replace a cracked phone. The salesperson, Rohan, has laid out a two-year plan that adds a new phone and a tablet. Walid keeps pausing and glancing your way. You know nothing about the plan, or about him.

The scene

Rohan: Phone, tablet, unlimited data, two years. The price is only good until we close tonight.

Walid: My son said sign nothing without him. But he's flying until tomorrow.

Rohan: I can't hold it past tonight. Honestly, I'd take it. But I'm the salesman.

Walid: An honest salesman. Two years, though. I wish somebody would just tell me.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to step into a stranger's situation. What did you do?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
