Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
What does "more depth" mean?
You are a peer helper on duty at the drop-in desk of a student learning center.
In the drop-in help room, Adelaida, a first-year student, holds her first university paper, marked "needs more depth." Adalberto, the lead teaching assistant, is at the desk beside you. Adelaida cannot reach her instructor before the next paper is due. You decide how to respond.
The scene
Adelaida: I worked so hard, and this just says needs more depth.
Adalberto: I know it's frustrating, but helpers shouldn't guess what an instructor meant.
Adelaida: My next paper is due Friday; the instructor won't answer until afterward.
Adalberto: Then it's your call here. How do you want to respond?
The two questions
- 1What would you do or say to Adelaida, and why?
- 2Describe a time you had to give someone support or guidance without being sure you had the full answer. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
