Scene to read · Equity, Collaboration
A team of three
You are on a four-person team entered in a weekend coding competition.
The competition has a $4,000 prize and allows teams of three or four. Tomasz, who arrived in the country three months ago, wrote your fastest code in the practice round but misread the task twice, and his limited English has slowed every planning meeting. Ten minutes before he arrives at the library meeting room, teammates Faisal and Rivka pull you aside.
The scene
Faisal: Teams of three are allowed. With Tomasz, we spent an hour on one diagram.
Rivka: I like him. But I need my share of that prize for tuition.
Faisal: We'd tell him straight, tonight. Better than carrying him and resenting it all weekend.
Rivka: It still feels bad. We need your vote before he walks in.
The two questions
- 1How would you vote, and what would you say to Faisal and Rivka?
- 2What is a team's responsibility to a member who makes the work slower through no fault of their own?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
