The corner stall

You volunteer as the stall coordinator at a weekly farmers market.

The corner spot gets the most foot traffic. Haruto has sold honey there for ten years. Chanthou started selling dumplings in the spring and was told when she signed up that spots rotate. Before opening, both are at the information tent.

The scene

Chanthou: The form says spots rotate. I'd just love one turn.

Haruto: My regulars have found me on that corner for ten years. They'd think I quit.

Chanthou: I'd happily put up a sign pointing to you.

Haruto: You're sweet. You're also after my corner. Well, coordinator, who gets it?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you decide who gets the corner, and what would you tell each of them?
  2. 2When should long service earn someone an advantage over a newcomer, and when should it not?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
