Scene to read · Equity, Professionalism
The first hour belongs to whom?
You are the court monitor on shift at a recreation center, responsible for applying the posted court rules.
Beside Court 2, Odhran, 55, the adult league organizer, and Oisin, 25, a drop-in player, approach you. The posted schedule reserves the first hour for drop-ins, but the league traditionally begins during that hour. The league's end time cannot be extended, while Oisin and the other drop-in players have just begun their game.
The scene
Odhran: We've always started league games now. Can you clear this court?
Oisin: The sign says we get this hour. We've only just started.
Odhran: I've got twelve players waiting, and we can't extend our booking.
Oisin: I work until six. This is the only time I can play.
The two questions
- 1What would you do in this moment, and what would you say to Odhran and Oisin?
- 2When a posted rule conflicts with a long-standing habit, how do you decide which should carry more weight?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
