Scene to read · Equity, Empathy

An easier name

You are a group leader at an after-school program for elementary students.

It is the first week of the program. A 10-year-old, Oluwaseun, has just joined your group. You and your co-leader, Kyle, are taking attendance in the gym.

The scene

Kyle: Olu... Olu-wa... that's a mouthful. Buddy, how about we just call you Sean? Easier for everyone.

Oluwaseun: (looking at the floor) ...Okay.

Kyle: (to you) Great. Put him down as Sean.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2Why do you think names matter to people?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
