Scene to read · Equity, Communication

Eleven notes

You are a member of a public speaking club.

After practice, the club president, Sade, who picks who goes to competitions, gave Adnan, the club's only immigrant member, eleven corrections and everyone else two or three. You have noticed the same pattern for weeks. Adnan has stayed behind in the meeting room with the two of you.

The scene

Adnan: Eleven notes for me tonight. Everyone else got two. Is my English that bad?

Sade: It's good. You could actually win regionals, so I push you hardest.

Adnan: It feels less like pushing and more like I don't belong.

Sade: That's not it at all. Ask someone who's watched every session.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Adnan and Sade?
  2. 2When does holding one person to a higher standard help them, and when does it become unfair?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
