Written scenario · Equity, Problem solving
Forty spots
You help run a free summer coding camp for high school students.
The camp has 40 spots and received 300 applications. The organizers are choosing between three ways to fill them: first come, first served when online registration opens at midnight; a random lottery; or selection based on a short written essay. They have asked for your recommendation.

The two questions
- 1Which approach would you recommend, and why?
- 2Who might each approach leave out?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
