Fourteenth on the sheet
You run the sign-in sheet at a free legal-advice evening in a library meeting room.
Twice a month two lawyers give free half-hour consultations. Tonight there are ten appointments and twenty names on your sheet, and the flyer promised appointments in sign-in order. Helping Liesel, fourteenth on the sheet, with her form because she reads little English, you notice that her hearing is on Thursday; she has not asked for anything. You could ask the room who has a deadline this week, but that means people describing their legal troubles in front of strangers, and you cannot verify anyone's answer. The lawyers begin in five minutes, and the next session is in two weeks.
The two questions
- 1How would you decide who is seen tonight, and what would you say to the people waiting?
- 2Describe a time you had to share out something limited among people who all had a claim to it. How did you decide?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
