Half a tour

You and Kai are volunteer evaluators for an art museum's docent certification.

In today's trial tour the trainee was strong for the first half, then froze, apologized and stopped. The program's rule is that an unfinished tour fails, with the next attempt in six months. In the lobby, Rafael, the program coordinator, is waiting for your joint score.

The scene

Kai: Half a tour is a fail. Real visitors can't be left standing there.

Rafael: Her first half was the best I've seen. Six months is a long wait.

Kai: We failed two others for less last spring.

Rafael: True. I need one score from you both. What's it going to be?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Kai and Rafael, and what score or alternative would you propose?
  2. 2When does treating everyone the same stop being fair?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
