One standard for posting
You are a student ombuds volunteer who helps resolve questions about course policies, and you have been asked to recommend a way forward.
In the student ombuds office, Althea, a course assistant, meets with Alois, a returning student aged 66. Online discussion posts count toward participation. Alois has an unreliable home internet connection and often posts after the deadline. Althea has asked for your recommendation.
The scene
Althea: Every student gets the same deadline, Alois; consistent deadlines make grading fair.
Alois: My connection drops for hours; I write on time but upload late.
Althea: Exceptions invite more requests, and I can't verify every student's connection.
Alois: I'm not seeking special treatment, just avoiding penalties beyond my control.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to Althea and Alois, and why?
- 2When is it fair to apply one standard to everyone, and when should access needs change how a rule is applied?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
