Not in the middle
You volunteer at the information booth of a downtown night market.
Tonight's printed program includes a blessing with incense and chanting, led by a local immigrant community association at the central stage. Tomoko, a shopper, has come to the booth, where Franziska is volunteering with you.
The scene
Tomoko: That incense is drifting into the food stalls. My husband's coughing, people are leaving.
Franziska: Let's move them to the far lot. It's quicker than arguing.
Tomoko: Nobody knows what the chanting is. It feels odd, right in the middle.
Franziska: It's on the program twenty more minutes. Your call. Do we talk to them?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Tomoko, and would you approach the group leading the blessing?
- 2When should the comfort of a majority give way to the place of a smaller group, and when should it not?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
