A reason she'd rather not give
You are waiting in the priority boarding lane at a ferry terminal.
The lane is for travelers who need extra time or assistance, and it works on trust; nobody checks. Just ahead of you is Deepika, a traveler who appears fit and well. Ghada, who is behind you, speaks up loudly enough for the whole lane to hear.
The scene
Ghada: This lane's for people who need it, like my mother back there. You look fine.
Deepika: I have a reason. I'd rather not explain it to everyone.
Ghada: Then nobody can check, and anybody can walk in.
Ghada: You saw her stroll up. Am I wrong?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Ghada, and would you say anything to Deepika?
- 2When you cannot tell whether someone is entitled to something, what should guide how you treat them?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
