Quietly, to mornings
You keep the court booking board at a community tennis club, as a volunteer.
The club has a half-price rate for players on low incomes. It barely broke even last year, and three full-price members have threatened to quit over crowded evenings. At the booking board, the club president, Hadas, who appoints the volunteers, gives you an instruction as fellow volunteer Connor listens.
The scene
Hadas: Move the half-price players to mornings this week. Quietly. Full dues keep these courts open.
Connor: Most of them work days. Mornings means they just stop coming.
Hadas: If three full members leave, there's no half-price rate for anyone.
Connor: It's allowed. That doesn't make it right. It's your pencil on that board.
The two questions
- 1What would you do with this week's schedule, and what would you say to Hadas?
- 2When an organization's survival and its fairness to members pull in different directions, how should it choose?
