Scene to read · Equity, Professionalism
A local address
You work the front desk of a public swimming pool with a coworker, Samira.
The free residents' swim requires ID showing a local address, a rule brought in after visitors from out of town filled the sessions. Babajide, who is staying at a shelter two blocks away, has no such ID.
The scene
Babajide: I've stayed at the Pine Street shelter six weeks. That's my address.
Samira: I believe you. But the rule says photo ID with a local address.
Samira: If we wave one person through, we can't refuse the next.
Babajide: I just want a swim and a shower. Is there any way?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Babajide and Samira?
- 2What should happen when a fair rule leaves out the people it was never written with in mind?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
