Two minutes for everyone?

Each speaker gets two minutes, and about thirty residents are still signed up. Several speakers will use interpreters, so their two minutes carry only about half as much content. Some residents have waited more than an hour and say they must leave by nine. No rule forbids you from adjusting the limit, but others may see any change as unfair. You must decide before the next speaker begins.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do as chair, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether treating everyone identically was actually fair to everyone. What did you do, and what did you learn?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
