Same rule for everybody
You work at the help desk of a public library's computer room.
Each patron gets thirty minutes when others are waiting. Luz is partway through an online job application that closes at five and cannot be saved. Four people are in line, and your coworker Brent is watching the clock.
The scene
Brent: Her thirty minutes are up. Same rule for everybody, or it isn't a rule.
Luz: It closes at five and won't save. I need fifteen more minutes.
Brent: Everyone in that line has a reason too.
Luz: Please. I don't have a computer at home. What do I do?
The two questions
- 1What would you do?
- 2When is it fair to make an exception to a rule that exists to keep things fair?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
