Vote or step back

You sit on the student union funding committee and are also a member of the debate club.

The last twelve hundred dollars will go either to the debate club's annual tournament or to a new cultural association with no track record, and the vote is tied without you. In the committee room are Imelda, the association's founder, and Daisuke, a fellow committee member.

The scene

Daisuke: The rules let you vote. Otherwise we're tied and the money lapses.

Imelda: We're new, I know. But how do we build a record if nobody funds us?

Imelda: Your club's had funding for five years. For us, this is the first event.

Daisuke: Debate's tournament is proven, though. So, vote or step back?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Imelda and Daisuke?
  2. 2Can a person judge fairly when they stand to gain from one of the outcomes? What helps?
