The first three hundred

You sit on a city technology advisory committee.

A local company has made its first 300 real-time translation earpieces and has asked the city who should get them. Businesses would pay full price, and the company says that revenue would fund a second, much larger production run within six months. The refugee resettlement office and the public schools want priority and a required discount that only the city can enforce; with it, the second run could take two years. Lamar, a resettlement caseworker, tells the committee that his clients are missing school meetings and appointments now.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to share something limited among people with different needs. How did you decide?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
