A rule for speaking turns
You are the most talkative member of a tutorial group, and the group has asked you to cast the deciding vote on a speaking rule.
In a seminar room after tutorial, where participation is graded, Adelina and Adelio, both adult members of your group, are talking. Adelio has proposed that everyone speak in turn so quieter people can earn marks. Adelina disagrees. The group will follow whichever way you vote.
The scene
Adelio: Some of us can't get a word in, and participation marks count.
Adelina: A turn rule makes discussion stiff, and people who prepare shouldn't be slowed down.
Adelio: Preparing doesn't help if the same few voices always fill the whole hour.
Adelina: Fair enough, but I don't want a timer. You talk most, so you decide.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Adelina and Adelio?
- 2How do you decide when a group's fairness rules should limit people who contribute the most?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
