Not enough honey cakes

You are helping pack holiday meal bags in a synagogue social hall.

Sixty bags are going out, some to congregation members and some to families referred by a refugee resettlement agency, but only forty honey cakes were donated. Rizal is packing beside you. Shirley, who has run the packing for years and assigns everyone's shifts, is checking the list, with other helpers in earshot.

The scene

Rizal: We're twenty honey cakes short. Skip the agency families. They won't appreciate them anyway.

Shirley: It's a thought. Our members wait all year for those.

Rizal: They don't even keep the holiday. It isn't unkind, just practical.

Shirley: Someone goes without either way. You're packing that table. Any objection?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Rizal and Shirley, and why?
  2. 2When something has to be shared out unequally, what makes one way of dividing it fairer than another?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Communication
