Unwritten rules
You organized tonight's printing workshop for your photography club.
A member who joined last month talked over the instructor several times and picked up other people's wet prints, smudging two. He has gone home. In the darkroom afterward, Ivan, whose print was ruined, and Jia, the club's founder, stay behind with you.
The scene
Ivan: He ruined two prints and never said sorry. He shouldn't come back.
Jia: Nobody told him the rules. We never wrote them down. He might not know.
Ivan: Or he knows and doesn't care. Three people told me they won't come next time.
Jia: Maybe so. You ran this one. What do we tell him?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and what would you say to the new member?
- 2When should a group adapt to make room for one person, and when is it fair to ask that person to leave?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
