Scene to read · Equity, Communication
I know him
You volunteer at the checkout desk of a community tool library.
Late fees are five dollars a day, and volunteers may waive them at their discretion. You are at the checkout desk beside Hank, the volunteer who trained you. He just waved off a fee for a regular he has known for years. Now Mr. Osei, a new member, is returning a drill two days late, within earshot of other members at the shelves.
The scene
Hank: Two days late, so that's ten dollars. Sorry, the fees keep this place open.
Mr. Osei: The man ahead of me was late too. You waved him through.
Hank: He's fixed half our tools for free. That's what discretion is for.
Mr. Osei: And I'm new, so I pay. You work here too. Did that look fair?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond?
- 2Describe a time you noticed a rule being applied differently to different people. What did you do?
What raters look for
