Scene to read · Equity, Communication
Who opens?
You produce a weekly student talk show on campus radio.
Tonight Tracy's rants have drawn nearly every listener text, and her co-host, Maricel, has barely spoken all hour. A three-minute song is playing. In the booth, both take off their headphones and look at you.
The scene
Tracy: Twelve texts on my parking rant! Let me open the next one too.
Maricel: Sure. Honestly, maybe I should just run the board from now on.
Tracy: No, don't quit. I'm just saying, give listeners what they're texting for.
Maricel: I prepped the housing story all week. But it's fine. Producer, who opens?
The two questions
- 1Who would you have open the next segment, and what would you say to each of them?
- 2Is giving everyone equal time the same as being fair? Why or why not?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
