Casper scenario · Written scenario · Ethics, Empathy

A teammate's accidental doping

You train with an amateur cycling club.

Your training partner, Dana, won the club's regional race and its $3,000 prize, which was paid out on the day. Over coffee she tells you that a cold medicine she took the week before contains a substance on the banned list; she only noticed after the race. She has already used the prize for the deposit on her mother's dental surgery, which insurance will not cover. If she reports it, she must return the money. The runner-up is a young rider hoping to be noticed by a national team.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Dana, and why?
  2. 2Should an honest mistake be treated the same as deliberate cheating? Explain your reasoning.

A sample answer, and how to improve it

A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 6 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 8, with the reason for each change.

What raters look for

Ethics

Empathy
