Scene to read · Motivation, Self-awareness
Comfort isn't a crime
You have run the file room at a small law office for six years.
You can do the job half asleep, and you have been accepted into a two-year paralegal training program that pays a third less. In the file room, your boss, Ming, makes you an offer while Vivian, the senior paralegal who mentors you, shelves folders nearby.
The scene
Ming: Permanent contract, a raise, your Fridays. Nobody runs this room like you.
Vivian: It's generous, Ming. But you've outgrown this room. Take the program, pay cut and all.
Ming: Comfort isn't a crime. Rent doesn't care about growth.
Vivian: And at fifty you'll still be here, alphabetizing. Which do you want?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Ming and Vivian?
- 2Describe a time you chose between a comfortable option and one that would stretch you. What did you choose and why?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
