Scene to read · Motivation, Professionalism

You're making us look bad

You have a summer job on a city parks maintenance crew.

On a hot afternoon, your crew is clearing litter along a riverside trail. Your two coworkers, Derek and Shay, have been taking long breaks, and you have filled three times as many bags as either of them.

The scene

Derek: Slow down, man. They pay us the same whether we fill ten bags or fifty.

Shay: Seriously. The supervisor's going to start expecting that from all of us.

Derek: Why do you even care so much? It's a summer job.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond, and would you change how you work?
  2. 2What motivates you to do good work when no one is checking?

What raters look for

Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
