Money or lessons
You teach guitar lessons at a music store.
You love teaching, and your schedule is full. The store manager is leaving, and the owner, Ellen, wants you to take over: better pay, but almost no teaching. As your fellow teacher Dev packs up in the lesson room, Ellen comes in to ask you.
What's said in the scene
Ellen: It's twelve thousand more a year. I need an answer by Friday.
Dev: Take it. You'd be crazy not to. Nobody gets rich teaching scales.
Ellen: You'd give up most of your students, I won't pretend otherwise.
Dev: Money or lessons. Come on, what matters more to you?
The two questions
- 1How would you make this decision, and what would you say to Ellen?
- 2What would you want your work to give you besides income, and why?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
