Two months from done
You are the senior baker at a neighborhood bakery.
Leo is ten months into a one-year apprenticeship that the owner, Mrs. Brandt, has paid for. A delivery company has offered him a job that pays more and starts Monday. At four in the morning, by the ovens, he tells her.
What's said in the scene
Leo: It's six dollars more an hour, and no three a.m. alarms.
Mrs. Brandt: Two months from your certificate, and you walk away? I trained you for this.
Leo: I'm grateful. But I have rent, and I'm tired.
Mrs. Brandt: You were him once. Tell him what you'd do.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Leo and Mrs. Brandt?
- 2How do you decide whether to finish something when a better short-term option appears?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
