Written scenario · Professionalism, Ethics

Two weeks after the funeral

You are a member of the safety committee at a distribution warehouse.

Rohan, a forklift operator with eleven years and a clean record, lost his wife two weeks ago. Last night he reported for his shift groggy from a prescribed sleep aid, and a supervisor sent him home before he touched any equipment. The rule is a two-week unpaid suspension for anyone who reports impaired. It was written after a serious forklift accident, and it has been applied to three other workers this year, one of whom was also going through a family crisis. The committee must recommend whether to apply it or make an exception.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend to the committee, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, should a safety rule bend for a person's circumstances?

What raters look for

Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
