Personal question · Professionalism, Self-awareness
Told it wasn't good enough
Almost everyone eventually hears from the person overseeing their work that something they were responsible for is not good enough. How we take that message in the moment, and what we do with it once the conversation is over, can say more about us than the original problem did.
The two questions
- 1Describe a time someone who oversaw your work, such as a manager, instructor, or project lead, told you directly that something you were responsible for was not meeting expectations. How did you respond in the moment, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time, after that conversation, when you put what you learned into practice. What had you changed, and is there anything about your first reaction you would handle differently today?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
