Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
The truck can wait
You pack apples in an orchard packing shed during harvest rush.
Earlier you overheard Nestor, who has packed here for twenty seasons, on the phone arranging his son's weekly therapy sessions in the city, every Thursday from one o'clock. Now, beside the apple sorting line, he is asking the shed manager, Jyoti, for that time off and giving a different reason.
The scene
Nestor: Just Thursdays from one, Jyoti. My truck's failing, the shop's only open then.
Jyoti: In peak week? I turned down two others. A truck can wait till November.
Nestor: Then I don't know what to tell you. I need Thursdays.
Jyoti: Give me a reason I can defend. You work beside him. Is it urgent?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Jyoti, and what would you say to Nestor?
- 2Describe a time you knew something private about someone that would have helped them if others knew. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
