Her slides, your voice
You are the events organizer for a local birdwatching society.
Tonight's guest speaker canceled an hour ago and emailed her slides, saying only to use them if they help. A hundred people are arriving at the lecture hall. You know the topic a little and have not opened the slides. In the lobby, the society's president, Rizal, and your co-organizer, Yong, look at you.
The scene
Rizal: You know owls. Take her slides and give them something. People drove here.
Yong: Slides you've never even opened? Better to cancel and rebook her properly.
Rizal: Half of them won't come back if we send them home.
Yong: And if it's bad, they won't either. Doors open in ten. What's it going to be?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2How do you decide whether something imperfect and on time is better than nothing at all?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
